How to Become a Close Protection Officer in the UK: Full Guide

Close protection is one of the most prestigious and well-paid specialisms in the UK security industry. Close protection officers (CPOs), commonly known as bodyguards, protect individuals from threats to their safety — including assault, kidnapping, harassment and stalking. It is demanding, highly skilled work that attracts former military personnel, police officers and experienced security professionals. This guide explains how to get into the field.

What Does a Close Protection Officer Do?

The role goes far beyond standing next to someone and looking intimidating. CPOs carry out a range of professional security tasks:

  • Threat and risk assessment — evaluating potential threats to the client and designing security plans accordingly
  • Route planning — researching and planning travel routes, identifying safe havens and alternative routes
  • Advance work — visiting venues, hotels and meeting points before the client arrives to check for security risks
  • Embus and debus drills — managing the client's movement in and out of vehicles safely
  • Foot protection — walking with the client in public, maintaining situational awareness
  • Residential security — securing the client's home, managing access and monitoring perimeter security
  • Surveillance detection — identifying if the client is being watched or followed
  • Emergency response — reacting to attacks, medical emergencies or hostile situations
  • Liaising with local police — coordinating with law enforcement when operating in their area
  • Reporting — maintaining daily logs and incident reports

CPOs work with high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), celebrities, corporate executives, politicians, diplomats and occasionally families or children of high-profile clients.

The SIA Close Protection Licence

To work as a close protection officer in England, Scotland or Wales, you must hold a valid SIA Close Protection licence. Working without one is a criminal offence.

Training Requirements

The SIA requires you to complete the Level 3 Certificate for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry. This is significantly more demanding than other SIA licence qualifications.

  • Duration: 2 to 3 weeks (typically 10 to 15 training days)
  • Content: Threat assessment, route planning, embus/debus drills, surveillance detection, close quarter protection, first aid (including trauma care), defensive driving theory, operational planning, legal aspects of close protection, communication and teamwork
  • Assessment: Written exams, practical scenario assessments and observed exercises
  • Prerequisites: You must be at least 18 years old. No formal qualifications are required to enrol, but training providers expect a good level of physical fitness

Training Costs

Close protection training is the most expensive SIA qualification:

  • Training course: £1,500 to £3,000 depending on the provider and course length
  • SIA licence fee: £210
  • Total investment: approximately £1,710 to £3,210

Some courses include additional modules such as advanced driving, maritime security or hostile environment awareness training (HEAT), which increase the cost but add to your employability.

Choosing a Training Provider

This is critical. The close protection industry has a problem with poor-quality training providers who charge high fees but deliver substandard courses that leave graduates unprepared for real work. Look for:

  • SIA-approved — the provider must be on the SIA register of approved training centres
  • Industry reputation — check reviews, speak to graduates, look for providers with experienced CP instructors who have genuine operational backgrounds
  • Practical focus — the best courses are heavily practical with realistic scenarios, not just classroom theory
  • Small class sizes — you get more hands-on experience with smaller groups (ideally under 12)
  • Post-course support — good providers help graduates with job placement, CV advice and industry contacts

Well-regarded providers include Longmoor Close Protection Academy, Argus Europe, Phoenix CP and Edinburgh International Protection Centre, among others.

What Experience Do You Need?

While the SIA does not mandate prior security experience for the CPO licence, the reality of getting hired is different. Most close protection employers expect:

  • Minimum 2 to 3 years in the security industry (door supervision, guarding or event security)
  • Military or police background is highly valued but not essential
  • Full clean UK driving licence — almost always required
  • First aid at work qualification — the course includes first aid, but many employers want additional qualifications
  • Physical fitness — you may need to walk for miles, carry equipment and react quickly in emergencies

Useful Additional Qualifications

  • Advanced driving course — highly valued, especially for residential and mobile CP work
  • Emergency first response / trauma care — goes beyond standard first aid
  • Conflict management — additional courses beyond the SIA syllabus
  • Languages — useful for international work, particularly Arabic, Russian or Mandarin
  • HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) — essential for international and high-risk CP work

Close Protection Officer Salary

CPO pay varies enormously depending on the client, the risk level, the location and whether you work in the UK or internationally.

UK Pay Rates

  • Entry-level CPO (UK residential): £150 to £250 per day
  • Experienced CPO (UK corporate): £250 to £400 per day
  • Team leader: £350 to £500 per day
  • Annual salary (full-time employed): £35,000 to £70,000
  • Senior / team leader (employed): £55,000 to £85,000

International Pay Rates

  • Low-risk international (Europe, US): £300 to £500 per day
  • High-risk international (Middle East, Africa): £400 to £800+ per day
  • Maritime security: £350 to £600 per day
  • Annual earnings for active freelance CPOs: £50,000 to £120,000+

International work is where the highest earnings are, but it involves extended time away from home and significantly higher personal risk.

Getting Your First CPO Job

This is the hardest part. The close protection industry is competitive, and the biggest challenge most newly qualified CPOs face is the classic problem: you need experience to get hired, but you need to get hired to gain experience. Here is how to break through:

  • Network relentlessly — attend industry events, join the International Professional Security Association (IPSA), connect with established CPOs on LinkedIn
  • Start with lower-profile work — celebrity events, corporate hospitality, property security. These jobs are less glamorous but build your CV
  • Register with CP agencies — companies like Crossfire, Mobius International and Proteus regularly need operatives for ad-hoc assignments
  • Offer to work a few jobs at reduced rates to build references and prove your capability
  • Keep your SIA licence, first aid and DBS up to date — expired documents are an instant rejection
  • Present yourself professionally — CP clients pay for discretion and polish. Your appearance, manner and communication must be impeccable

Is Close Protection Right for You?

Close protection is not for everyone. Before investing in training, consider whether you can handle:

  • Long, irregular hours — 16-hour days are common, especially on mobile tasks
  • Time away from home — residential tasks and international work mean weeks or months away
  • High-pressure decision making — you must stay calm and act decisively in emergencies
  • Discretion — you will see and hear things about your client's private life that must remain confidential
  • Physical demands — you need to maintain fitness and be prepared to use physical intervention if necessary

If you have the temperament, discipline and commitment, close protection offers one of the most rewarding and well-compensated careers in the security industry.
